Back Brace Training

BAck Brace 1By Oscar Bemudez Portillo, C.P.O., HSC Prosthetics Lab

As part of the training of the prosthetics lab students for the final module of the program (Orthosis of Spine), the students need to learn how to make appropriate back braces. To help the students learn this critical skill, I invited Juan Carlos Camacho, a CPO from Mexico with a lot of experience in this specialty, to visit Hôpital Sacré Coeur and help us teach the students how to make back braces.

We scheduled 3 patients for the week so the students could go step by step with Juan Carlos and make the braces; but in the end, we assisted 5 patients.

As is often the case at HSC, when people heard about what we were doing, even more patients traveled to the hospital in hopes of a solution to their condition.

We happily adjusted our schedule and we accomplished all the goals of the visits. The 5 patients have the devices they need and the quality of their lives has improved.

Back Brace 2I am also very pleased to report that students, Daniel and Dantus, now have the skills to make the back braces by themselves without supervision.

We are grateful to Juan Carlos Camacho for his generosity in making the trip to Haiti and for sharing his expertise with such attentiveness, compassion and patience. He took back to Mexico a favorable impression of Hôpital Sacré Coeur, the prosthetics lab and our fine students.
