Dr. Ogedad Pierre: A Sterling Orthopedist

By Abdel Alexis, Director of Human Resources, Hôpital Sacré Coeur

Many outstanding doctors and staff have marked the history of Hôpital Sacré Coeur and Dr. Ogedad Pierre is working diligently to add his name in capital letters to that honor roll. Born in Pignon on June 19, 1978 into a Christian family of five, Dr. Pierre grew up in an atmosphere of prayer and serenity that emphasized the teaching and applying of Christian values. His father, a churchman and a carpenter, inspired Dr. Pierre’s profession as an Orthopedist. At his father’s feet, Dr. Pierre learned the importance of disciplined hard work, service to others and the practical techniques of how to use the saw and hammer.

A man of physically commanding stature and a gentle, reassuring presence, Dr. Pierre completed his secondary education in 2002 and studied medicine at Notre Dame of Haiti where he graduated in 2008. He then attended Bright University for a year adding social service studies to his credentials.

Passionate about his work, Dr. Pierre spent 4 years (2010 to 2014) specializing in orthopedic and trauma surgery at Justinian University Hospital in Cap-Haïtien. Immediately after this specialized training, Dr. Pierre began practicing his beloved profession at Hospital Charity Gable where he spent several months as a full-time Orthopedist. In October 2014, following the departure of then Orthopedist Dr. Jean Jacky for a fellowship in Puerto Rico, Dr. Pierre was hired by the Orthopedic Department at Hôpital Sacré Coeur as chief Orthopaedic Surgeon on duty. (It should be recalled that this service was created as a permanent position at the end of 2012 by Dr. Jacques Julmice, former Medical Director of the institution.) Dr. Pierre also taught for two years as a Faculty member of the Université Roi Henri Christophe of Limonade Medicine, a branch of the University of State of Haiti. His courses included the anatomy of the limbs, orthopedics and a joint physiology course for the Institute of Physical Therapy Technicians (ITTP) of Cap-Haïtien. Dr. Pierre is married to a Pediatrician and is the father of two children: a 2-year-old and a 2-month-old.

Blessed with excellent technical skills and good knowledge, Dr. Pierre quickly draws in the trust of patients, the Haitian staff and volunteers like a magnet of love. Sage and always calm, Dr. Pierre has been instrumental in establishing the growing reputation of the Orthopedic Department of the HSC. Under his leadership and with the help of volunteers, the hospital’s orthopedic department celebrated, on August 16, the 100th SIGN (sign nail) surgery for 2016. Statistics show that of the over 100 interventions performed in Haiti with the SIGN nail, 60 of them were performed at HSC. Thanks to this remarkable record, motivation and sense of service, many accident victims from the public highway and from all parts of the country get the specialized cared they need at Hôpital Sacré Coeur and proceed on a path to wellness.

Dr. Pierre also oversees two other sections at the hospital (Physiotherapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics) related to orthopedics and traumatology.

Dr. Pierre proudly holds the plaque he received from Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida, where he conducted Pediatric Grand Rounds on March 2.

The establishment of these critical sections are the result of the vision set by HSC’s CEO and Executive Director, Dr. Harold Prévil. Without doubt, HSC is becoming a cener of excellence in Haiti in the field of orthopedics and rehabilitation.

In sum, we can proudly conclude that Dr. Pierre has distinguished himself as a highly competent and caring surgeon who helps Hôpital Sacré Coeur to achieve its mission and realize its vision to be the “best hospital in the north of Haiti”.
