In Memory of Joselene Cilien

With heavy hearts and deep sadness, we report the tragic death of Joselene Cilien.

A valued and beloved employee of Hôpital Sacré Coeur since 2009, she was Coordinator of the Volunteer Medical Clinics. Smart, caring and ever so personable, Joselene impressed the multitude of volunteers who visited the hospital with her efficiency and grace. A shining star among the hospital staff, Joselene was a candidate for the BSN and MSN Nursing School program.

“Joselene Cilien’s tragic passing is a severe loss to her family, the staff of HSC and the hundreds of volunteers who had come to know her in her role as Clinic Volunteer Coordinator, “said CRUDEM /HSC Foundation President, David G. Butler, MD. “Her patience, friendly smile and concern for patients and staff alike will be sorely missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family in this time of sorrow.”

Celien died in a car accident in Port au Prince on Wednesday morning, August 15. The shock and grief expressed with the news of her passing, spreads throughout the CRUDEM/HSC community.

“Joselene was not only an intelligent nurse, but she had a natural ability to make you want to be a better person. She was ‘full of life’ and exuded hope,” remembers Tina Greco-Steinmeyer, RN, a member of the CRUDEM BSN Nursing School Committee. “The people around Joselene truly felt blessed by her presence. That feeling will forever impact me, her friends and the family she has left behind. Joselene always greeted me with her gleaming, bright smile and a warm hug upon my visits to HSC and engaged in many wonderful stories about life.”

Born February 10, 1981, Joselene graduated from C.R.A in 1998 and from College L’Essor in Cap Haitien in 2001. She continued her nursing training at EINDS (Ecole de Infirmieneres Notre Dame de la Sagesse) and graduated in 2006. She was the eldest of two daughters and lived in Cap Haitien. She became engaged in November, 2011.

Cilien began her career at Hôpital Sacré Coeur as a nurse in the Medical Surgical Unit and then was promoted to her position as coordinator of the volunteer specialists’ outpatient clinics where she touched the hearts of HSC visitors.

“Joselene was currently pursuing her higher education in Nursing and was selectively chosen to be 1 of 22 nurses to be part of the 1st accredited BSN program in Haiti. As a student, Joselene outshined in English class and pushed herself to excel at every opportunity which was fueled by raw confidence and pure hope. Joselene demonstrated great leadership skills and often was willing to help other students who were having difficulties in English lessons,” said Greco-Stienmeyer.

“I know I’m not alone in saying that I will remember Joselene for her ability to always keep hope alive along with her beautiful smile, even in the direst situations. I will miss you dearly Joselene. May your soul rest in peace and may you always be smiling down from Heaven.”
