Milot: Rich in Haitian History

Milot, home of Hôpital Sacré Coeur, sits in the north of Haiti, 12 miles south of the port city of Cap Haitien. Nestled by mountains on three sides, Milot is home to a rotunda shaped Basilica Cathedral that was built in 1804 and to the earthquake ruins of the formerly mirrored and gilded San Souci Palace.

Between 1810 and 1813 the palace was built by the self-declared King Henri Christophe. If you travel up a five mile cobblestone road (a 3000 feet gain in altitude), you can tour Haiti’s most revered treasure, the Citadel Laferriere. During the years of 1805-1820, the Citadel was built by King Christophe and served to discourage invasions by Napoleon Bonaparte. Both the palace and the Citadel are UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites.
