The Face of Success!

At Hôpital Sacré Coeur, thanks to your support, we look success in the eyes every day.

One of six children, 5 year old Magdalene lives in suffocating, extreme poverty with her parents, five siblings and blind grandparents. Cobbled together bits of fronds and moldy grasses stake out the lumpy dirt floors of their hut. The stench of rotting garbage and human waste ride the breezes and cling to the walls. And, all around, a jungle of vegetation and creatures stalk, ever determined to reclaim the small spot Magdalene’s family calls home.

Last summer, Magdalene awoke to find that her mother, who was sleeping beside her, had died during the night, a victim of cholera. Unable to understand why her mother was taken from the bed, never to return home again, Magdalene went into depression, and would not speak or eat.
Magdalene"

A week later she too got cholera along with her baby sister of one and a half years.

Magdalene with a huge avacado Sr. Ann met Magdalene after her admission to the HSC cholera unit. Under her compassionate care, eventually little Magdalene began to eat and talk. Before the child left the hospital, Sr. Ann arranged for follow up care and schooling for all the children.

On Monday, October 10th, after her very first day of school, Magdalene and her brothers made a surprise visit to Sr. Ann. Dressed in her spotless uniform, school bag slung on her back, tiny Magdalene brought Sister a huge avocado as a token of appreciation. Today, the delights of a healthy childhood course Magdalene’s life.

Every day, Hôpital Sacré Coeur provides medical care, compassion and hope to children battered by the elements of their impoverished, dangerous world.

The games Haitian children play take place, not in attractive parks and playgrounds, but amidst the potentially lethal viruses and bacteria of cholera, malaria, and tetanus—to name only a few. In the place of backyard barbeques, loaded up with hot dogs and hamburgers, the children of Haiti watch dangerously spitting, open fires that cook more charcoal than food. Way too often, the hot oil filled pots or kerosene lamps spill on them, burning their young flesh. Way too many burned children die. Girl with burns all over her body

For over 25 years, CRUDEM/Hôpital Sacré Coeur has treated the heartbreaking injuries, ailments and life-threatening diseases that permeate the world of Haitian children. For over 25 years, we have reached out to the region with preventive healthcare, pre-natal care, vaccinations and education. For over 25 years, we have been brought to tears by the cruel realities in the lives of Haiti’s children.

While we can’t change the despairing landscape, with your kind generosity, we can help children like Magdalene find a safe path through the challenges.
