Haiti Health Promise of Holy Name/ Hôpital Sacré Coeur

Overview

Hôpital Sacré Coeur is the largest private (i.e., non-government) hospital and public health provider for the 750,000 people living in the immediate area of Milot and the 2.4 million people in the Northern Haiti Departments or region. Established in 1968 by the Montreal Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart on land owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Cap Haitïen. The CRUDEM Foundation, Inc. of St Louis, Missouri, assumed supervision of and financial responsibility for Hôpital Sacré Coeur in 1986.

In 2012, the Holy Name Foundation of Teaneck, NJ, brought CRUDEM under the medical system of Holy Name as Haiti Health Promise of Holy Name. In addition to substantial financial support, Holy Name provides the full range of technical, operational, training, and administrative assistance to Hôpital Sacré Coeur and augments them with a network of U.S. medical professionals, volunteers, and resources.

Hôpital Sacré Coeur Services

Annually, Hôpital Sacré Coeur experiences unprecedented growth in size and reputation. Now a government designated reference hospital for the Northern Department of Haiti, the hospital expanded from 10 beds in 1986 to 230 inpatient beds today. The hospital staff of 426 includes 335 full-time, 35 contractual, 36 temporary, and 20 medical interns.

In addition to inpatient services (including an Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), Hôpital Sacré Coeur has a 24/7 emergency room, outpatient clinics, maternity services, pediatric services, dental services, a prosthetic clinic, a pharmacy, a clinical laboratory, a pathology service, a blood bank, and four operating theaters. The hospital also provides a full range of HIV/AIDS services, including the prevention of mother-to-child transmission program. Outreach is done through the Community Health Service, with public health nurses and community health workers serving sites throughout the region and reaching 150,000 people with vaccinations, prenatal care, basic hygiene and nutrition training, HIV/AIDS screening, tuberculosis, malaria, and lymphatic filariasis treatment. In addition, Hôpital Sacré Coeur distributes critically needed nutritious meal packs to children, pregnant and nursing women, the elderly, and the disabled. To date, over 3.5 million meals have been sent. In 2015, Hôpital Sacré Coeur, with support from Holy Name, launched a comprehensive continuing education program for the hospital’s more than 100 nurses. Staff training also includes a steady rotation of medical, administrative, and information technology staff to relevant departments at Holy Name’s headquarters in Teaneck, NJ. In 2025, in conjunction with a university in Haiti and the University of Montreal, Hôpital Sacré Coeur began a 2- year training program for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Holy Name’s Chief Financial Officer audits all financial transactions.

Our Mission

Rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, the mission of Hôpital Sacré Coeur is to be both a Catholic hospital and medical center, consistent with the ideals of the Order of Malta, providing quality healthcare to the sick and the poor in the Haitian community, and an educational center for all who serve healthcare in Haiti.
