We are celebrating Milot, Haiti, home of Hôpital Sacré Coeur! One of the most beautiful places to visit in Milot is the Citadel. Located high on a mountain top, the Citadel is the largest fortress in the western hemisphere. Between 1810 and 1813 the palace was built by the self-declared King Henri Christophe. If you travel up a five mile cobblestone road (a 3000 feet gain in altitude), you can tour Haiti’s most revered treasure, the Citadel Laferriere. During the years of 1805-1820, the Citadel was built by King Christophe and served to discourage invasions by Napoleon Bonaparte. Both the palace and the Citadel are UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites.
