100th SIGN Surgery Performed at Hôpital Sacré Coeur

On August 9, the Orthopedic Staff of Hôpital Sacré Coeur performed their 100th SIGN Surgery of 2016, to the great relief and happiness of 100 patients and their families.
The SIGN (surgical implant generation network) was developed by Dr. Lewis Zirkle as a device that goes inside the bones to stabilize the bone while it heals.

SIGN Fracture Care, Inc. generously donated all the nails to Hôpital Sacré Coeur. Their mission is to bring healing to the victims of orthopaedic injuries throughout the developing world, by collaborating with surgeons in these countries to develop orthopaedic implants and training that will help them to heal the severely broken bones of their patients.

Pierre Ogedad, MD, HSC’s Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and SIGN Surgeon, notes, “In the two years that SIGN surgeries have been performed at Hôpital Sacré Coeur, our expertise continues to grow. We have progressed from standard nails to Fin nails and, now, Pediatric nails. All our efforts work to ensure our patients are happy and enjoy successful outcomes.”

Jacksonville Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. John Lovejoy, Jr. has lead volunteer medical teams to Milot annually for over 20 years. “We are most fortunate to have Dr. Pierre at Hôpital Sacré Coeur,” he said. “Dr. Pierre has been trained in the technique to use the SIGN system. I believe he has done the most in Haiti, I know for sure the most in Northern Haiti, to provide quality healthcare to orthopedic patients. 100 surgeries in less than 8 months is a great accomplishment. We are proud of him and his team. The patients in Haiti are extremely lucky to have him as their surgeon!”

The CRUDEM Foundation joins Drs. Ogedad and Lovejoy and the patients and staff at Hôpital Sacré Coeur in extending our appreciation to Dr. Zirkle and SIGN Fracture Care, International for their generosity and commitment to making Hôpital Sacré Coeur a center of excellence for orthopedic patients.
