Hurricane Matthew Takes Catastrophic Aim at Haiti

Within 24 hours, Category 5 Hurricane Matthew will hit Haiti with devastating consequences. Loss of life, building collapses, deadly flying debris, floods and mudslides will be the immediate effects. In the days and months to come, the overfilled canals and waterways will likely spread cholera and other life threatening bacteria. Many once clean water supplies will be compromised. Large numbers of crops and livestock will likely be destroyed erasing food stocks and putting a halt to food production. The number of malnourished people — particularly children — will soar. The injured will begin a race against the clock to receive medical care before infections turn deadly and claim their lives.

Hôpital Sacré-Coeur will Play a Crucial Role in National Recovery Efforts

Hôpital Sacré-Coeur in the northeastern town of Milot, will not be spared from some damage, though it will mercifully be out of the direct impact zone. As it was after the 2010 earthquake, Hôpital Sacré-Coeur will play a crucial role in national recovery efforts. The punishing storm will no doubt severely hamper or eliminate the healthcare facilities in the southern, western and central regions. Once again, Hôpital Sacré-Coeur will stand ready to offer quality healthcare to the victims of Hurricane Matthew.

We are Preparing Now…We Need Your Help

CRUDEM/Hôpital Sacré-Coeur is no stranger to natural disasters. Since the mission’s inception in 1968 — almost 50 years ago — many hurricanes have taken its toll on Haiti — Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Tomas to name only a few. We know — and have successfully dealt with — the catastrophic consequences. We know what to expect. We know what we need to do to prepare now to be a merciful light and refuge in the aftermath of a catastrophic storm.

Right now, we need to increase our medical supplies to ensure that we can provide care to the expected influx of patients.
