Construction Update: Your Funds at Work

By Charles T. Dubuque Board Member, CRUDEM Foundation Building Committee Chair

The New Year began in earnest with the completion of a number of projects that were begun as our patient counts from last year’s earthquake dwindled and, more recently, the Cholera epidemic.

Building Committee:
The main goal of our Building Committee was to upgrade critical pieces to our infrastructure. Over the last year major upgrades were made to warehouse space, maintenance facilities, new electrical distribution, upgraded power generation and satellite installation for consistent internet access.

With these improvements in place, we can embark on providing even better patient care. Foremost on our agenda is an expansion of our maternity services.

Maternity Services:
We will be expanding our Labor/Delivery and Maternity ward into a new self-contained space. This will provide a more intimate birthing experience for our patients, as well as a more efficient area for our staff to serve those patients. This new facility will be in use by summer.

Lab:
Through a partnership with CRS (Catholic Relief Services), our Lab is undergoing an expansion by approximately 30%. We are very proud of our Lab and its staff, and the additional space will allow us to meet the rising demand that has been placed on both. Work will be completed by April 2011.

Outpatient Clinic:
The busiest part of our hospital by far is our Outpatient Clinic. Last year Hôpital Sacré Coeur served well over 50,000 patients through our Outpatient Clinic. This number has been rising steadily. The congestion this area deals with and the stress that is placed on our staff as well as our patients has made it clear that we need to expand.

With the hope for a successful Capital Campaign, we have begun the process of acquiring a piece of property that adjoins our hospital and have completed preliminary drawings and designs for a completely new Outpatient Clinic. The specifics of this critical project are being handled by the health care division of Duke Realty.

Their design team has been hard at work to deliver a functional, efficient and patient- friendly new Outpatient Clinic.

Mési Anpil! We have received so many gifts from so many individuals and companies. All of us at CRUDEM feel it is essential that we treat all of these gifts of equipment, supplies and materials with the utmost respect. Our Haitian staff is working hard to grasp the concept of preventive maintenance and repair.

We value these gifts we have been given and as such; we feel it is our duty to do all that we can to ensure their maximum usefulness.

The foundation for growth has been laid. With continued blessings we look forward to expanding and enhancing our facilities to continue to serve the people of Haiti.
