Spring 2012 Construction Update: Your Funds at Work

By Charles T. Dubuque, Board Member, CRUDEM Foundation Building Committee Chair

As we begin a new year, we are still focusing on completing projects from 2011. The current status on these projects is as follows:

Generator House:
We have expanded the structure, installed the new truss system and placed the new CAT 350 KW Gensets in place. The roof and walls should be completed in within 30 days. The electricians from the Mazzetti group in San Francisco are targeting mid-April for the final electrical connection.

Dr. Bernard/Dr. Hanna residence:
The land has been cleared. The slab has been poured. Once we have received the container of materials from customs in Port au Prince, assembly and erection will be completed in two weeks.

Nutrition Center:
The slab for this structure is being prepared. Once the building units are released from customs in Port au Prince, assembly and erection with that two weeks.

Physical Therapy Area:
Dr. John Lovejoy, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL and his Prosthetics Lab supporters have funded the construction of a PT area directly in front of the Prosthetic Lab facing south. It will consist of a concrete pad, hand rails and a metal canopy. Construction has already begun and completion anticipated before summer.

Deep water well:
The well was dug a few weeks ago to a depth of 140 ft. We are awaiting the shipment of the pump to pressurize the water. This should be completed by May.

Radiology expansion:
We increased the space of the radiology area by over 30%. Through the efforts of Dr. Dick Sibley of West Virginia, Radon is supplying a complete installation of a second X-ray machine as well as additional devices to modernize the entire department.

Maternity/Labor & Delivery:
Modular units were installed and a complete renovation of the hospital’s second floor resulted in a new Maternity Ward, a new birthing suite and a new OR for C-sections. The center opened on January 3rd amidst great celebration!

Demolition of RX/SOP:
The interior of the old RX/SOP has been demolished and cleared out awaiting renovation that will provide additional dormitory housing for volunteers and nursing students.

Storage Containers:
Two used containers were placed next to the Sprung warehouse. One container holds all of the needs of the Cardiac Team. The second container now holds supplies for emergency disaster response.

Temperature Controlled Storage:
The back 30% of the Sprung warehouse was walled off and insulated to accommodate temperature controlled storage. Shelves and racks are also in place as is a separate cooling unit.

Cloud based Internet system:
The Meraki Cloud system has been installed by Rob Cadick with TriMedix. This allows us to control high bandwidth usage as well as monitoring ongoing activity. This entire system can be managed and viewed entirely from the U.S.

Installation of fiber optic cables:
This installation has greatly improved reliability and quality throughout our campus.

Inventory control & bar code system:
This system has been installed in both the Sprung warehouse, the new RX/SOP as well as the secured Pharmacy. Data has been entered and we continue to train the employees.

Engineering studies for canal relocation:
The village canal that runs along and behind the Lab will be re-located to accommodate a new family center. (The area where families cook and clean for their relatives who are patients.)
