Yves Paul: Civil Engineering Student Volunteer

Yves Paul came to CRUDEM for the summer as a non-medical volunteer. He was introduced to us by a faculty member of the Northeastern University Engineering Studies Department in Boston.

Yves was originally from Les Cayes in the far southwest of Haiti. He left Haiti in 2004 to study engineering in New England and was accepted at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst into the undergraduate Civil Engineering program. Yves graduated this past spring and decided that he wanted to give something back to those who have not had the opportunity to achieve his level of success.

During his summer, Yves participated in several new building projects at Sacré Coeur. His first task was to engineer and construct a new road into the recently purchased land parcel that lay directly east of the hospital. The road was so well done; it is being acknowledged by others in our valley as a fine example of well-constructed pediment, a model to be copied and deployed for other road projects.

Yves also had important roles in the construction of the new maternity ward, improved site drainage and runoff enhancements, the expansion of the generator house, the locating and securing needed additional storage containers and numerous other construction and design activities.

Yves’ spirit and selfless contributions affirm the ideals that CRUDEM stands for; charity, compassion and steady commitment to teaching others better ways to improve their lives. We are all very proud and thankful to be able to call Yves Paul our friend and another Angel of Milot.

Building committee and board member Tom Boldt of St Louis worked closely with Yves. Tom summed up everyone’s impression: “Yves is a terrific guy!!!”
